Legacy
This incident is one of several shootings in the area within the past two weeks. As recent as Wednesday, August 22, 2007 (a block away from the reported incident) there was a literal shoot out in the area of North Capitol Street and T. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! The following Friday night, shootings were reported in the alley between the unit blocks of T. Street and Todd Place NE. Over the years, this area has been one plagued with drugs and gang activity. For a short period, between 2004 and 2006, this activity seemed to subside. The recent resurgence of this activity has been an escalation in previous behavior to the extent that the criminals have total disregard for innocent bystanders. Seemingly, there is some sort of 'turf war' or 'beef' in place. Until recently, the population of this community was predominately low/low middle income, minority residents. The recent boom in real estate sales and gentrification in this neighborhood has not been accompanied by a commensurate rise in security. Will the same efforts to insure security be afforded the residents of this community as those employed in Columbia Height and other more affluent neighborhoods? Hummmm………
