Two construction workers suffered serious injuries after being struck by a steel beam at a building project downtown Tuesday morning.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter says the men were about 30 feet below ground when they were lowering the beam and something broke loose. One man was hit across the back, and the other man was hit in the head.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Both men then fell off a ladder on which they were working and fell 10 feet onto other construction materials. Etter says the injuries are serious but not life threatening.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of 11th Street, Northwest.

Rescue crews had to use a crane to lift the men out of the construction site.

Traffic was effected while rescue efforts were underway.

OSHA is investigating the accident.
