'Pants' Lawsuit Defendants Raise Money for Legal Fees

The owners of a D.C. dry cleaner who were sued $54 million over a missing pair of pants have raised enough money to pay most of their legal fees.
The owners of Custom Cleaners had sought nearly $83,000 from Roy Pearson to recover the costs of successfully defending themselves from the 2005 lawsuit.
But in a court filing Monday, the Chungs' attorneys said a cocktail fundraiser last month brought in $70,000. That money, combined with other donations, raised enough cash to cover most of the Chungs' expenses.
The defendants say they wanted to put the matter behind them and are urging Pearson not to appeal a trial judge's verdict in the case.
Pearson, a local administrative law judge, initially demanded $67 million from the Chungs, but later reduced the amount to $54 million.
