The daughters of two workers who were struck and killed by Metro trains last year have received the first scholarships from a memorial fund established to help children of employees who die on the job.
Metro officials say 19-year-old Lillian Cherry and 18-year-old Martha Lee will each receive $5,000 to help with college expenses. Cherry will study culinary arts at the Art Institute of Washington to study culinary arts, and Lee will study business, marketing and digital media at George Washington University.
Lee's father, Jong Won Lee, was hit by a train near the Dupont Circle Station on May 14th, 2006. Cherry's father, Leslie Arvell Cherry of Clinton, died after being hit by a train while inspecting tracks on November 30th.
Both accidents are being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
