Emergency Care Center Marks First Year

After its first year in business, Maryland's only stand-alone emergency medical center is being hailed as a success and a possible model for others across the state.
Officials say the Shady Grove Adventist Emergency Center at Germantown treated more than 22,000 patients in its first year - about 30 percent more than initial projections.
They're expecting 28,000 or more patients in the coming year.
Officials say its location allows ambulance crews to get back on the road twice as fast after a call.
It has also increased access to care in upper Montgomery County.
It has almost all the amenities of a major hospital, without the inpatient beds.
Patients who can't be treated there are transferred elsewhere, most to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.
A similar pilot program is already in the planning stage on the Eastern Shore, where, growth and traffic are concerns for medical officials.
