Emergency Care Center Marks First Year
posted 8:03 am Tue August 07, 2007 - Germantown, MD
After its first year in business, Maryland's only stand-alone emergency medical center is being hailed as a success and a possible model for others across the state. Officials say the Shady Grove Adventist Emergency Center at Germantown treated more than 22,000 patients in its first year - about 30 percent more than initial projections.

They're expecting 28,000 or more patients in the coming year.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Officials say its location allows ambulance crews to get back on the road twice as fast after a call.

It has also increased access to care in upper Montgomery County.

It has almost all the amenities of a major hospital, without the inpatient beds.

Patients who can't be treated there are transferred elsewhere, most to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.

A similar pilot program is already in the planning stage on the Eastern Shore, where, growth and traffic are concerns for medical officials.
