Watergate Hotel Closes for Renovations

One of D.C.'s most famous landmarks is getting a new look.
The 40-year-old Watergate Hotel will be closed for the next 18 months for a $170 million, top-to-bottom makeover.
Officials say they plan to make the 13-story building on banks of the Potomac the most upscale hotel in Washington.
There will be fewer, but larger rooms, averaging about 650 square feet. The management is also bringing in a new partner and operating company.
One thing that won't change is the name. Principal Michael Darby says it's too good to let go.
The infamous 1972 burglary that led to the downfall of President Richard Nixon was at Democratic National Committee headquarters, in an office building connected to the hotel.
The six-building Watergate complex also includes residences.
