Smoke Detectors Scrutinized After Laurel Apartment Blaze
posted 10:00 am Mon July 23, 2007 - Laurel, Md.
Fire investigators are looking into claims that the smoke detectors did not work at a Laurel apartment building which caught fire Sunday, injuring a firefighter and leaving 75 people homeless.
Firefighters from Anne Arundel and Montgomery counties were called in to help Prince George's County firefighters battle the blaze. The three-alarm fire began about two a.m. Sunday.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Authorities say the complex didn't have a buildingwide alarm system to alert residents - and it wasn't required to have one.
The apartment management company decline to comment.
